Sierra Leone Malegohun Community Development
  About James M. Gendemeh

In 1995, Founder and Executive Director James M. Gendemeh, Jr. came to the United States from Guinea with his father and family, where they had been living as refugees for three years to escape the rebel war in their home country of Sierra Leone. In 2006, Mr. Gendemeh’s father was planning to go back home when he suffered a massive heart attack and died very suddenly. Mr. Gendemeh had to return to Africa to his family’s home village for the first time in 13 years for the burial of his father. This was a strange home coming for Mr. Gendemeh. He was shocked by the level of suffering and poverty that had descended upon the country as a result of the war, but Mr. Gendemeh was very surprised when an elder asked him for help, and not to be forgotten. In this culture the old do not ask the young for direction or help. This elder really humbled himself to ask, because the needs of the people were so great. This is what gave Mr. Gendemeh along with his wife Mawiyah Gendemeh, the resolve to provide aid for Sierra Leone's Malegohun community to overcome the obstacles that plague the country and its people.
